The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WHRA) has announced some of the reckless cuts ordered by our provincial government that will have a negative impact on our members, the services they deliver and the families who rely on these services.

They announced that they are privatizing the following services out of all locations except for Health Sciences Centre.

  • adult outpatient care for audiology
  • adult outpatient occupational therapy
  • adult outpatient physiotherapy

These services may be available to some who are unable to afford them, however specific criteria will determine who can access this option, requiring the majority of MB’s to pay for services that used to be public.

Health care aides and professional technical staff will likely have their schedule of rotations for their shifts change while the WRHA seeks to optimize the workflow, which will be a major disruption as members can expect to get notice of termination for their shifts and then by seniority will have to bump back into rotation.

We are concerned about the loss of positions and that management is not able to give us any clear answers at this time.

It was also announced that long-term care patients would be seeing higher user fees and four well-utilized QuickCare clinics in Winnipeg will be closed by the end of January, leaving only one remaining on McGregor Street.  Services will be redirected to the existing Access centres.

We recognize the anxiety and stress these announcements and incomplete information cause. Please know we are working with Human Resources on your behalf and are doing everything in our power to provide you with the information that you need. Please also watch your email for upcoming UFCW 832 organized meetings to discuss further.
