Recently UFCW & all of the other Unions representing Healthcare met with representatives of Government & the Provincial Health Labour Relations Services (PHLRS) regarding representation votes that are required by the Health Sector Bargaining Unit Review Act or Bill 29.

The Health Sector Bargaining Unit Review Act is a law passed by the Pallister Government to reduce the number of healthcare contracts and ultimately reduce the number of Unions representing members in healthcare.  This will be done by having one union with one collective agreement representing members in each sector in each of the current Regional Health Authorities and the newly created Shared Health.

The list of where each of the facilities/units will be placed was provided to the Unions at the meeting.  SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOU…

Members at Grace Hospital (Including Pharmacy Program & DSM)

  • All members (except those in DSM & DI) will be voting in the “Professional/Technical/Paramedical” sector for the WRHA
  • Those members in DSM & DI will be voting in the “Professional/Technical/Paramedical” sector for Shared Health
  • DSM has already moved into the Shared Health organization & effective April 1, 2019, DI will also be moving into Shared Health

Members of the NRHA

  • All members will be voting in the “Facility Support” sector for the NRHA

Members at St Boniface General Hospital

  • All members (except those in DSM & DI) will be voting in the “Facility Support” sector for the WRHA
  • Those members in DSM & DI will be voting in the ”Facility Support” sector for Shared Health
  • DSM has already moved into the Shared Health organization & effective April 1, 2019, DI will also be moving into Shared Health
  • We have raised concerns about what this means for our members who support Diagnostic Imaging and we will be providing additional information to these members as we meet and well in advance of the April 1, 2019 changes taking place.

Members at WRHA Laundry Inkster site

  • All members will be voting in the “Facility Support” sector for the WRHA

This is the information that we have received to date.  Each and everyone one of you knows all too well that what may be the reality today, could be very different tomorrow.  If we do hear of any changes, as always, along with updates we will keep you informed.  If you hear anything different, please let us know.

We appreciate that this information does not answer many of the questions that you may have.  Erin Selby, our Healthcare Campaign Coordinator has asked me to include a FAQ sheet, which is enclosed in this mail out.  I have added Erin’s contact information to the bottom of this letter as well.  We are equally as frustrated at this process and the length of time it is taking and what it is doing to YOU, OUR MEMBERS!  We will continue to keep you as up to date and continue to fight for the answers to the many challenges & changes you are facing.

As always please contact your full-time Union Representative if you have any questions or concerns about this or any other issues.
